Landscape Swatch

Landscape Swatch is a sculptural series that distills landscape into concentrated fields of color and form. Solid-worked in glass, each piece is composed through a process of layering, compressing, and shaping molten pigment into a dense, luminous mass. The result is a compact terrain—an abstract fragment of landscape held within the material.

The series draws inspiration from two seemingly distant sources: the quiet restraint of Japanese sumi-e painting and the saturated palette language of 1970s textile design. From sumi-e comes the philosophy of reduction—the power of gesture, negative space, and the suggestion of landscape through minimal means. From 1970s fabric design comes the bold confidence of color: unexpected combinations that feel both nostalgic and immediate.

Within each Landscape Swatch, these influences converge. Bands of color settle into one another like sediment layers or horizon lines, forming compositions that feel both painterly and geological. The glass holds pigment in suspension, creating depth and movement within a compact sculptural form.

Each piece is individually hot-worked, allowing subtle variations in color density, edge, and internal composition. Light penetrates the glass and reveals shifting tonal relationships, allowing the object to change character depending on its environment.

Landscape Swatch functions as both object and color study—a tactile fragment of imagined terrain where painting, design, and glass converge in a distilled sculptural language.
