Colony is a sculptural vessel that continues Andi Kovel’s exploration of color, form, and material presence. Hand-blown and hot-assembled, the piece approaches glass as a sculptural medium—where color becomes a physical building element within the form.

The process begins with individual bubbles of colored glass, each blown separately in a single hue. At 1000 degrees, these bubbles are broken free from the pipe into the artist’s hands and pressed one by one onto the surface of a clear vessel. As the colored forms accumulate, they gather across the body of the piece like a growing system of cells or mineral clusters. Once the surface is fully composed, the vessel is rolled across a steel table—the marver—compressing the elements into a unified surface that remains flush while retaining dimensionality.

The result is a surface that holds both structure and movement, with pigment shifting in density and rhythm as light passes through the form.

Related to the Beam series in its exploration of palette and distilled form, Colony expands the investigation by building color from individual components that gather into a cohesive whole. Each piece carries a sense of growth and accumulation, where small gestures form a larger visual ecosystem.

Every Colony vessel is individually hand-blown and assembled in the hot shop, capturing the immediacy of molten glass and the physical choreography of the process. Slight variations in color composition and form make each piece unique.

Colony exists somewhere between vessel and sculpture—a contained landscape of color, light, and material gesture.
